Organisation level projects

  • At organisation level, productivity improvement involves much more than squeezing the most out of existing resources – it looks for  opportunities to launch new products or services, to open up new markets or segments, or to restructure the business in some other major way

  • Such changes are sometimes prompted as much by a CEO’s ego and personal ambition as by pure business logic – aka ‘vanity projects’ – Boards must perform their role in controlling such CEOs, using the organisation’s cardinal measures to back them
  • Change at organisation level should offer the prospect of significant growth in revenue or significant reductions in unit costs but, with substantial costs likely to be involved, risk management and contingency planning must be employed before final decisions are taken
