- Once a resource is available and paid for, it’s usually wasteful to leave it idle – it must be used on productive work as much as possible:
- ‘Productive work’ is work which meets customers’ demand – which adds value to them for which they will pay
- ‘Unproductive work’ adds no value to customers and includes time spent idle, waiting or correcting mistakes because you didn’t do things ‘right first time’
- Possible reasons for a resource not being used productively include:
- Most of the above reasons will be caused by poor systems/ methods in use rather than the knowledge and motivation levels of the people involved
